嘉峪關(guān)位于甘肅嘉峪關(guān)市向西5公里處，是明長城西端的第一重關(guān)，也是古代“絲綢之路”的交通要沖。是明代萬里長城西端起點(diǎn)，始建于明洪武五年（公元1372年），先后經(jīng)過168年時(shí)間的修建，成為萬里長城沿線最為壯觀的關(guān)城。嘉峪關(guān)關(guān)城1961年被國務(wù)院公布為第一批全國文物重點(diǎn)保護(hù)單位。1965年以關(guān)名建市。

嘉峪關(guān)市區(qū)西南6公里處，位于嘉峪關(guān)最狹窄的山谷中部,地勢最高的嘉峪山上，城關(guān)兩翼的城墻橫穿沙漠戈壁，向北8公里連黑山懸壁長城，向南7公里，是明代萬里長城西端主宰，自古為河西第一隘口。嘉峪關(guān)關(guān)城，位于嘉峪關(guān)最狹窄的山谷中部，地勢最高的嘉峪山上，城關(guān)兩翼的'城墻橫穿沙漠戈壁。嘉峪關(guān)以地勢險(xiǎn)要，巍峨壯觀著稱于世。與萬里之外的“天下第一關(guān)”——山海關(guān)遙相呼應(yīng)，聞名天下。

城四隅有角樓、南、北墻中段有敵樓，一層三間式帶前廊。兩門內(nèi)北側(cè)有馬道達(dá)城頂。關(guān)城正中有一官井，舊有亭，今已廢。西門外套筑一道凸形城墻，構(gòu)成一個(gè)羅城，這就是外城。

東甕城外有文昌閣、關(guān)帝廟、戲樓，城內(nèi)靠北有游擊衙門府一座，都是清代建筑。新中國成立后，關(guān)城曾多次維修加固，至今保存完好。

西面羅城磚砌，東、南、北有土筑圍墻，連接長城。城外有城，迭門重城，成并守之勢。

麓，因山而名。明洪武五年（1372）修筑萬里長城時(shí)置。當(dāng)時(shí)明征虜大將軍馮勝看中嘉峪山西北麓的險(xiǎn)要地勢，選為河西第一隘口，開始筑城設(shè)關(guān)，以后經(jīng)歷一百多年時(shí)間擴(kuò)建，才形成一個(gè)比較完整的防御體系。明弘治年間，為防吐魯番東侵，曾進(jìn)行重修。
